Almost Animal began as a cabinet — a functional object with tools for legs. But as hammers and wooden crates assembled into a standing structure, the form stopped resembling furniture and started resembling something alive.
A cabinet holds things in place; an animal exists in flux. This sculpture emerged somewhere in between: standing still, yet seemingly ready to move. Leaning into the transformation, I built a neck from clusters of colorful plastic balls, a head from a soft furry pillow, and a tail from curved wood — letting playful, organic forms grow out of the rigid skeleton of crates and tools.
The contradictions hold the piece together: hard and soft, function and instinct, stillness and motion. The tools give the creature its structure — but do they serve it, or does it carry them? Neither cabinet nor animal, it lingers at the boundary between what it was meant to be and what it has become.
